Engagement Ring Shopping Checklist

If you're thinking of purchasing an engagement ring, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Below is a checklist to help guide you through the process and ensure you make an informed and thoughtful purchase:

  1. Set a budget: Determine how much you're willing to spend on the engagement ring. Keep in mind that the industry standard is two months' salary, but ultimately, it should be a price point that you're comfortable with.

  2. Determine the ring style: Consider your partner's personal style and preferences. Do they prefer a more classic or modern design? Do they prefer a certain metal or gemstone? Take note of any specific design elements they may have mentioned or shown interest in.

  3. Choose the diamond or gemstone: If you're opting for a diamond, consider the "4 Cs": cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. If you're opting for a gemstone, research the properties and qualities of the specific gemstone to ensure it's durable enough for daily wear.

  4. Check the diamond certification: Ensure the diamond has been certified by a reputable and independent third-party organization, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), International Gemological Institute (IGI), or the American Gem Society (AGS).

  5. Consider the ring setting: Choose a setting that complements the diamond or gemstone and protects it from daily wear and tear. Popular setting styles include prong, bezel, and pave.

  6. Confirm the ring size: If you're unsure of your partner's ring size, consider borrowing one of their rings or measuring their finger while they're asleep. Keep in mind that it's easier to size a ring down than to size it up.

  7. Consider appraisals and insurance: Consider getting the engagement ring appraised and insuring the ring to protect your investment and ensure peace of mind. The largest expense you may encounter is due to damage causing the center stone to be lost. Only jewelry insurance will cover this unfortunate event.

  8. Purchase from a reputable jeweler you trust: Purchase from a reputable and established jeweler with a positive reputation and reviews. Research their credentials and certifications, and ensure they offer warranties and guarantees on their work. Ensure they listen to each element you want in your ring project and don't settle for something that isn't what you imagined. We recommend private jewelers!

By following this checklist, you can ensure a thoughtful and informed engagement ring purchase that will bring joy and happiness to you and your partner for years to come.
